What is the S2 visa?
S2 is a short-term private-affairs visa. Official Chinese visa guidance lists medical treatment among the personal matters that can fall within the S2 category.
Shanghai’s official immigration service guidance also states that foreigners receiving medical treatment in Shanghai, as well as accompanying foreign family members, may qualify for S2 handling with a “medical treatment” annotation in relevant visa replacement procedures.
What documents may be required?
Requirements depend on where the visa is being applied for and whether the application is made before travel or through an in-China immigration procedure. Consular officers or immigration authorities may request documents proving the purpose of the private matter.
For a medical case, patients should be prepared to provide hospital-related documentation if requested, such as an appointment, treatment confirmation, diagnosis information or other proof showing why the stay is necessary.
What about visa-free travellers?
China has expanded visa-free and transit-visa-free arrangements for many nationalities. A person who lawfully qualifies for visa-free entry may be able to receive ordinary medical care during that permitted stay without first obtaining an S2 visa.

- Check the latest entry rules for your passport.
- Confirm the permitted length of stay.
- If treatment may extend beyond your permitted stay, ask about extension or visa-replacement procedures early.
